PARIS (AFP) - Raymond Domenech has survived the sack with the French Football Federation announcing Thursday that he had kept his job as manager despite France's poor showing at Euro 2008.

But strict new conditions are to be imposed on 56-year-old Domenech in a bid to improve the national team's performance ahead of the start of 2010 World Cup qualifying in September.

The decision to stick with Domenech - by 18 votes for and one abstention - was announced by FFF president Jean-Pierre Escalettes.

He said: "The Executive Committee has maintained the manager in his post to prepare for the 2010 World Cup and redefined the terms of his mission and the conditions of management of the national team.

"This should be seen as a backing, but under conditions."

Domenech held his hands up to a series of errors, Escalettes said.

"The first thing was communication which for me was disastrous as it was too personalised," said the head of French football.

"It just added salt into the wound.

"He's asked for support from the national services to help him because from now on he has only one job: to concentrate on the pitch, the pitch, the pitch."

Escalettes also reflected on the French team's decision to hole themselves up in a chateau away from their fans and the media.

"This isolation was voluntary and it did us a lot of damage".

Domenech's position had been called into question after France were knocked out in the first round at the European championships, returning home with two defeats, one draw, six goals conceded and only one scored.

Off the pitch his and his players handling of the intense media interest surrounding his 2006 World Cup finalists was also questioned and described by Escalettes as "sometimes disastrous".

Escalettes said from now on each player would have to sign a communications "charter".

And a new committee - Club France 2010 - is to be set up to take charge of and keep a check on the progress of the national team leaving Domenech with little or no room for failure.

Club France 2010 will be made up of two presidents from the FFF and the French Football League, Domenech himself and Gerard Houllier (the FFF's technical director) as well as representatives from the professional world.

"I've asked the DTN (Houllier) to conduct an audit with the manager to find out what changes need to be made to the technical staff.

"The manager has accepted all these modifications," Escalettes revealed.

Domenech took over from Jacques Santini as France manager after Euro 2004 and two years later guided the team to the World Cup final where they lost on penalties to Italy.

But there were calls for his sacking after Les Bleus' calamitous run at Euro 2008 with 1998 World Cup winning captain Didier Deschamps' name in the frame to succeed him.

Under Domenech's watch France have won 30 of their 54 matches with 17 draws and seven defeats.

France's first World Cup qualifier is in Vienna against Euro co-hosts Austria on September 6.

Under Domenech's watch France have won 30 of their 54 matches with 17 draws and 7 defeats. Well, to me he still NOT GOOD ENOUGH ! POOR FRANCE !

zarkaa July 3rd, 2008 18:34

Only French keep loosers.
The victories were in friendly games against poor teams. what counts is when you are in the tournament. 1 draw, 2 killing defeats, that is the result of Euro 2008.
Italy took two days to kill donadoni and he went to the quarters.
May be this is why italy has 4 stars on their shirt and france only 1.

dudishmon July 3rd, 2008 18:39

i dont understand why he kept his job, is this a joke to the french, the rench probly could have won the euro if it wasnt for domenech, france have the players to do that sort of thing.............
well now thanks to Domenech france is now in 10 place in fifa ranking......................france could do much, much, better

Domenech surely has a very powerful god father, when i hear people saying he won 30 out of 54, most of those matches won he played little or on known teams, very poor for french football,

ajax72 July 3rd, 2008 23:18

But very good for the italian football. LOL

Tontodonati July 4th, 2008 00:33

Ajax72, didn't you read Zarkaa comment? If you didn't he said that Italy took 2 days to kill Donadoni. Please don't go by my own personal feelings toward Domenech. I have a big heart. I don't like to see people fired!

Giorgio, it never fails! The above stellar minds are negletting more important issues just to discuss Italy's Olympic Team. No wonder Italy is television's most watched soccer team in the world! As a matter of fact, I would make a great coach. I have the talent, the experience and the will. All I need is someone from the Italian Federation to believe in me!. Under my leadership, Italy, always retaining the best defense in the world, would also have the best attack in the world. Ajax72, at least, would appreciate that!

ajax72 July 4th, 2008 23:09

I do hope to live long enough to see this. Tonto for Commissario tecnico!

Fred,
As I said to you before: love us ot hate us, they just can't stay away from us.
Italians aloways arise passions, one way or the other. It's just too bad for these losers that we are winners.
And as Ajax also said, this blog would be really boring without the Italians spicing things up.
I mean, can you imagine this blog being run by Bulgarians and Singaporeans ? I'm yawning alreday !!!!!!!!!
