KRAKOW/BASEL, Oct 19 (SW) - A last-gasp strike by David Bentley gave Blackburn Rovers a UEFA Cup Group E win over Wisla Krakow on Thursday while Feyenoord came from behind to draw at Basel.
Wisla Krakow - Blackburn Rovers 1-2 The Poles started brightly and took the lead on 28 minutes as Mauro Cantoro hit a blast off of Tugay before seeing the ball hit the net right after the English side failed to properly handle a corner kick. Both sides had plenty of good looks at goal, but Rovers were the next to make on count as they equalized in the 56th minute when Bentley's cross picked out Robbie Savage who headed home for the 1-1 goal. Despite having their lead taken away, it looked like the home side would snatch a point from their group opener, but in the 90th minute Bentley pounced on a rebound after Emilian Dolha made a fine stop on a shot by Benni McCarthy. Basel - Feyenoord 1-1 Basel will be disappointed to only have a draw on Thursday after dominating Feyenoord at St. Jakob Park. Despite outshooting their opponents 26-8 (with 11 shots on target to just 3), it took the Swiss side until the hour mark to break the resistance of the Dutch side as Eduardo tapped home after Mladen Petric's shot was parried by Henk Timmer. But Erwin Koeman's team showed some nice resolve and picked up an equalizer 15 minutes later when substitute Stein Huysegems tapped home from inside the six-yard box after Jonathan de Guzman's centering pass. |
